How to write artist statements, descriptions and titles and blogs albeit Clairre Wishart style!

Oh boy, here we go…For some this might be extremely easy but for myself and others I am sure, it is hard, I would much rather be painting and creating than thinking of words to describe or enhance my artworks, but as I believe that anything we create: whether it be paintings, sculpture, craft, photography, cooking, textiles, words - they are all just mediums of art; we are all artists to some extent; in some form or another. To some it is in their blood, for others such as me, it needs to be learnt and hopefully the journey will be an interesting one.

SO! I cheated at first, ha-ha. I googled sites such as Artybollocks, an artwork name generator – the story shack and others to give me a glimpse of names and statements I could copy and paste and then with a beginning of a story I was able to put together some half decent, sometimes amusing and maybe clever, sometimes stupid and inane: titles and descriptions to my artworks!

I then personalized them by adding in some of the following leads below, you could add in different ones to vary your descriptions or use them all (also gleaned from google somewhere) and some original text of my own:

I created it with and by...

Some of the things I learnt while creating it, were....

My favourite part is...

If I could change something about it, it would be...

While making it I was surprised that...

Something else that I would like to share about this artwork is...

As I continued through each listing, I slowly started and will continue to evolve these titles and descriptions till maybe one day they will flow naturally out of me as these blogs are starting to do. Will I ever enjoy the art of writing? Not sure, definitely not like my daughters and youngest son, whose writing skills are way beyond me; but hopefully I will get better at it and more confident the more I practise. Then again, maybe I can hire one of them to do it and I can go make some art!

Hope you enjoy!

Let's get creative!
